The Waitemata Harbour on the East Coast of the North Island is one of the most beautiful in the world. Literally 100’s of islands everywhere, some inhabited, completes a vista which is ever changing. A proliferation of inshore species, from the famous hard fighting kingfish to good sized snapper for the dinner table plus kahawai and others, this harbour offers a wide variety of fishing choices and techniques. Auckland is home to many experienced fishing charter operators  with some starting just down the front of your hotel.

The Manukau Harbour is on Auckland’s West Coast and is a vastly under utilised fishing location. Its tidal range means its a lot different to the east coast but can be a prolific producer of trophy fish.

Being an inner harbour, you are unlikely to find Game Fish, but further out, they are there in season.

Auckland - Waitemata Harbour

The vast diversity of the islands, some habited like Waiheke Island with world class wineries and others where landing is not even permitted. The rugged coastline to beautiful white sandy beaches abound. Ideal for those who only want to enjoy the vistas, to others who enjoy the challenge of fishing.

Gulf Harbour

At the northern boundary of the Waitemata Harbour, on the tip of the Whangaparaoa Peninsular, lies the picturesque Gulf Harbour settlement and Marina. With some canal style living and shopping precincts , this marina is home to a few charters within easy reach of most of the hot fishing spots.
Waiheke Island

In the middle of the Waitemata harbour lies picturesque Waiheke Island, home to many Aucklanders doing the daily commute to work. Also famous for some of the best wines produced in New Zealand. Waiheke has great access to plenty of fishing for inshore species of all types and also offers spectacular salt water fly fishing as-well. Cruising to and from Downtown Auckland is also a highlight via ferry.

Manukau Harbour

On the West Coast of Auckland is the Manukau Harbour with good inshore fisheries, however the bar crossings out to the West Coast Tasman Sea can be hazardous, so local knowledge is essential. Game fishing for marlin in season is not so far out at sea so it’s amazing one can travel from the middle of a big city, go and catch a marlin, and be back in time for afternoon tea!

Great Barrier Island

On the far reaches of the Hauraki Gulf you find the Great Barrier Island. Some charters operate from here and since it is harder to get to (ferry or local air), the fishing is quite abundant. The local charter boys really know their stuff and where to catch the big ones. mainly out of Tryphena Harbour, but also Port Fitzroy.
