Stewart Island
(Rakiura)
Across the straight from Invercargill about 35 kms away is Stewart Island, assessable by ferry or plane. It has some great fishing including blue cod and bluenose, and diving for crayfish and paua. The remoteness of this rocky outcrop island has bred a tough group of people, and the charter vessels here are no exception. They have a large variety of species to target and an amazingly scenic coastline. Excellent diving for crays, molluscs, or spearing fish and stunning tall bladder kelp forests are stunning. A huge marine reserve in Paterson Inlet is an ultimate divers paradise. Some charters depart from Half moon bay on the island and some depart from Invercargill.
