The Wellington Fish & Game region is one of the largest in the North Island, comprising four main river systems – the Rangitikei, the Manawatu, the Ruamahanga and the Hutt. Each of these offers fantastic trout fishing but they are also fed by numerous smaller rivers and streams which hold healthy numbers of fish and many hundreds of kilometres of angling. The three main rivers flowing from the western Tararua Range – the Waikanae, Ohau and Otaki – have quality angling close to main population centres and, in the case of the latter, all the way from the sea to the source. This is a region of truly diverse freshwater fishing, varying in nature between classic ‘chalk’ streams through to world-class backcountry trophy trout fisheries.
